MAGA movement, nativist political movement that emerged in the United States during the 2016 presidential campaign of its putative leader, Donald Trump. Its name is derived from Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan “Make America Great Again,” which became a rallying cry for many Trump supporters during his candidacy, presidency (2017–21), and beyond.The MAGA movement (often referred to simply as MAGA, or Make America Great Again), was founded on the belief that the United States was once a “great” country but has lost this status owing to foreign influence, both within its borders (via immigration and multiculturalism) and without (via globalization, or the increased integration of multiple national economies). MAGA members think that this fall from grace can be reversed through “America first” policies that would provide a greater degree of economic protectionism, greatly reduce immigration, particularly from developing countries, and encourage or enforce what MAGA members consider to be traditional American values. Some MAGA-supported policies, such as Trump’s call in 2015 for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” would involve egregious racial or religious discrimination. (Some of the policies eventually adopted by the Trump administration did entail such discriminatory treatment of nonwhite immigrants; see below.)In addition to its political stances, the MAGA movement is known for its particularly combative character, which exemplifies the extreme partisanship of contemporary American politics. In keeping with that stance, controversial rhetoric has flourished within the movement, including messages that critics see as homophobic, sexist, or racist or as inciting violence.The MAGA movement is also known for having an antagonistic relationship with mainstream news media, which are thought by a majority in the movement to be biased against MAGA views, at best, and to be lying on behalf of the movement’s enemies, at worst. This belief has resulted in a vulnerability among MAGA members to false news stories and particularly far-fetched conspiracy theories circulated by MAGA-supporting media outlets and repeated by MAGA leaders. Examples include charges that Democratic former president Barack Obama is not a native-born U.S. citizen (“birtherism”), that Democrats’ immigration policies aim to replace white Americans with nonwhite immigrants (see replacement theory), that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump by Democrats through massive voter fraud, and that the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, in which a mob of Trump supporters attempted to halt Congress’s certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election, was actually staged by left-wing forces.A variant of the phrase “Make America Great Again” was first popularized by Republican Pres. Ronald Reagan, who used “Let’s Make America Great Again” as one of several slogans for his 1980 presidential campaign. Trump reportedly coined the phrase “Make America Great Again” in November 2012, just after Mitt Romney, the former Republican governor of Massachusetts, lost the 2012 presidential election to Obama. Trump filed an application to trademark the slogan for the purpose of “promoting public awareness of political issues and fundraising in the field of politics.” He announced his campaign’s slogan on the same day that he declared his candidacy for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination—June 16, 2015. This date can be seen as the beginning of the MAGA movement.Trump’s campaign quickly attracted strong support among conservative white working-class voters. Trump’s background as a businessman recommended itself to these Americans as a sign that he understood economics, and his lack of previous government service suggested that he was unstained by the corruption that they associated with Washington, D.C. They also appreciated his populist message, in which he contended that the federal government was controlled by Democratic “elites.” (MAGA members did not consider it at all contradictory that Trump, a billionaire, was himself a member of the country’s wealthy elite; in their view, Trump’s wealth simply meant that, when it came to elites, he knew what he was talking about.) Finally, and perhaps above all, they admired Trump’s personal style, which was notoriously belligerent and confrontational. Trump’s habit of bullying his opponents with personal insults and name-calling, as well as his regular boasting, encouraged MAGA members to think of him as an ordinary person or “regular guy” rather than as a conventional politician.

Many election experts and political commentators failed to take the MAGA phenomenon seriously. Trump’s nomination as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate in 2016 was seen as a boon to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning the 2016 presidential election; even Clinton herself felt comfortable enough during the race to publicly dismiss Trump’s most ardent supporters as a “basket of deplorables.” But the MAGA movement’s enthusiasm, combined with Clinton’s unpopularity among segments of independent voters in some states, resulted in Trump’s electoral victory, astonishing not only much of the country but the world.In the aftermath of the election, there was a rush to understand and respond to the new political power that the MAGA movement represented. The media ran numerous articles and television reports analyzing the development and makeup of the movement. Within the Republican Party, Trump became a kingmaker, his endorsement all but necessary to anyone who wished to win a Republican primary election for a major office.For the next four years, Trump used executive orders to make good on some of his promises to MAGA voters. One week into his term the new president signed an order that banned immigration to the United States from seven Muslim-majority countries. (After a district court enjoined enforcement of the ban, partly on the grounds that it violated anti-discrimination provisions and other aspects of U.S. immigration law, Trump issued a second order, which was also enjoined. A third version of the ban, which also applied to immigrants from North Korea and Venezuelan government officials, was eventually upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2018.) Also in January 2017 Trump signed an executive order directing “the immediate construction of a physical wall on the southern border” with Mexico. And in 2018 Trump began leveling tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, the European Union, and China. Simultaneously, he increased his popularity among Republicans in general by attempting to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), supporting a massive tax cut that primarily benefited corporations and the wealthy, and nominating three ultraconservative Supreme Court justices. Consequently, Trump’s movement was as strong as ever when he campaigned for reelection in 2020.However, by the end of his first term, Trump had become deeply unpopular with independent voters, resulting in his loss to his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden. In an unprecedented move among modern presidential candidates, Trump refused to concede the race, claiming that the election had been “rigged” by Democrats. Motivated by this lie, a MAGA-aligned crowd stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Whatever embarrassment the attack caused the movement, however, was short-lived. Quite the contrary, in fact: within a year most members of the MAGA movement were claiming that antifascist (“antifa”) activists had secretly instigated the assault, and by 2023 Trump himself was publicly celebrating the attack at rallies of his supporters.
The MAGA movement remains a powerful force in American politics. In late 2022 an estimated 4 in 10 Republicans identified themselves as “MAGA Republicans.” Shortly after the midterm elections of 2022, Trump declared his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In view of the strength of the MAGA movement, other candidates for the Republican nomination have been forced to adopt strategies that limit direct or serious criticisms of Trump and emphasize their acceptance of at least some of the extremist views of MAGA members. By President Joe Biden’s definition, MAGA voters are Republicans who have an allegiance to former President Donald Trump, believe the 2020 election was stolen and are more likely to view the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot as a justified reaction by patriots.
Not all Republicans hold those beliefs to the same degree; opinions vary from issue to issue, according to polls.
Republicans have become more accepting of the Capitol assault in the past year, polls show, but as a group, they remain roughly evenly divided about whether it was a legitimate protest.
The dispute over what it means to be a MAGA Republican has given the GOP an opening to accuse President Joe Biden of "smearing" half the voters in the country — the roughly 47% of those who voted in 2020 for former President Donald Trump.
MAGA — Trump’s trademark Make America Great Again 2016 campaign slogan — is subject to interpretation. Biden offered his take in a Sept. 1 speech in Philadelphia.
"There is no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans, and that is a threat to this country," Biden said. "MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe in the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people."
Biden’s insistence during the address that "not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans," has hardly mollified his critics. Fox News commentator Kayleigh McEnany, a former Trump administration press secretary, echoed a common GOP theme, tweeting that Biden had delivered the "most divisive presidential speech" she’d ever seen.
In a recent interview on CBS News’ "60 Minutes," Biden went further, citing two telltale markers that he believes distinguish MAGA Republicans.
"MAGA Republicans are the people who refuse to acknowledge that an election took place and there was a winner," Biden said Sept. 18. "The MAGA Republicans are those people who, in fact, say that the use of violence is a legitimate tool, like what happened to the Capitol."
We examined data to see where Republicans stand on election denialism and sympathy for the people who breached the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. It shows that Republican voters are divided on those points, but the differences among them are rarely crisp and clean.
As political scientist Christopher Cooper at Western Carolina University put it, "People don’t put on the MAGA label like a pair of pants — it’s an identity that some people have more of and some people have less of."
A focus on Trump
MAGA is the Trump brand, from campaign slogan, to red hats emblazoned with the letters, to the closing line of his stump speeches.
"A MAGA Republican is first and foremost a Trump supporter, no matter what he seems to do or say," said American University political scientist James Thurber.
A survey of self-identified MAGA voters conducted just after the Capitol assault found they strongly believe the election was stolen and that the riot was the work of antifa, a loose collection of activists who rally against fascism and far-right groups.
Since January 2021, pollsters have been asking Republican voters which they identify more with — Trump, or the Republican Party. In a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, support for Trump has been waning.
In January 2021, an equal number of Republican voters, 46%, said they supported Trump and the Republican Party. By September 2022, Trump supporters had dropped to 33%, and party supporters had risen to 58%.
A recent Politico/Morning Consult tracking poll asked Republicans to pick their preferred 2024 presidential candidate. Trump came in first with 52%, but that also meant about half of Republicans wanted another candidate. In a July New York Times survey, about a fifth of Republicans said Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 "went so far that he threatened American democracy."
Others are eager to define what it means to be a MAGA follower, but Republican voters appear to apply the label to themselves flexibly.
Cooper at Western Carolina University was part of a study of Southern state Republicans — people in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. The study’s poll gave self-identified Republicans the option to choose among the labels Traditional Republican, America First Republican and MAGA.
Respondents were asked to rate how well the labels fit them on a scale of 1= "not at all" to 10= "completely describes me." Nearly three-quarters of respondents picked a 6 or higher for more than one label.
"There are not bright lines between the three categories," said Western Carolina University’s Cooper. "But there is something distinct about MAGA Republican identifiers. They are less likely to believe that Donald Trump should be prosecuted for January 6, less likely to believe that our elections are free and fair, more likely to approve of Donald Trump."
Trump’s influence was evident in the primaries.
An analysis from senior fellow Elaine Kamarck at the Brookings Institution, a research and policy center in Washington, D.C., found that 96% of Trump-endorsed candidates won their recent primary elections. Those candidates were a select group — only about 12% of all Republican candidates got Trump’s nod.
Kamarck noted that many contests included Trump "wannabes."
"Candidates attacked each other for not being loyal enough to Trump or they tried to paint themselves as the best example of Trumpism, even when they did not get the formal endorsement," Kamarck wrote.
Thirty-six percent of primary candidates identified themselves as Trump or MAGA Republicans; 47% called themselves mainstream conservatives.
A majority of Republicans challenge the 2020 election
Biden defined MAGA Republicans as those who refuse to accept that he won the 2020 election. And poll results suggest that is true.
In the survey of Southern state Republicans, about 80% of those who identified strongly as MAGA said they did not believe the 2020 election was fair or accurate, compared with 66% of those who identified as Traditional Republicans.
But the percentages of election deniers are high for all Republicans. In survey after survey, between 60% and 70% of Republicans say Biden was not the legitimate winner.
The violence on Jan. 6
Biden said MAGA Republicans believe the violence that took place at the Capitol on Jan. 6 was justified.
Surveys show that Republican attitudes on the Capitol breach and the battle with law enforcement are divided. But a Monmouth University poll also found that in the past year, Republicans became a little more accepting of the violence that day.
In June 2021, 62% of Republican respondents said it was appropriate to call the event a riot. In August 2022, 45% said so.
In June 2021, 47% of Republicans said it was a legitimate protest, In August 2022, the fraction rose to 53%.
That roughly equal division among Republicans showed up again in a December 2021 CBS News poll. Then, 47% of Republicans said the people who stormed the Capitol were patriots; 53% said they were not.
But when asked in the CBS poll whether they approved of what took place, 76% of Republicans said they disapproved.

【文/观察者网 童黎】随着特朗普卸任，MAGA（Make America Great Again，让美国再次伟大）小红帽或许就“过时”了。这时候，一些拜登支持者喜欢的MAGA小蓝帽火了起来。
没错，这次也是MAGA——Made America Great Already（已经让美国变得伟大）。这样特朗普式的宣传风格，在不少民主党支持者看来简直是“活成了曾经自己最讨厌的样子”，并大呼“有生之年都不想再听到、看到MAGA”。
据“今日俄罗斯”12月4日报道，特朗普第一次办总统竞选活动时，就推出了印有“让美国再次伟大”（Make America Great Again）的小红帽。自此，戴它就成了特朗普最忠实支持者的标志性装扮。
现在，又有一家公司以自由派的名义推出了新款小蓝帽，上面印有“已经让美国变得伟大”（Made America Great Already）的字样。

巧的是，小蓝帽的缩写也是“MAGA”，在亚马逊上售价约15美元（约合人民币98元）。舆论在4日发酵后，特朗普的批评者并不买账。
有人觉得美国过去确实已经“伟大”了，只是特朗普让美国变成了“笑柄”。
但有批评人士指责其制造商试图用另一种“狂热”来取代一种“狂热”。
“我们已经有了蓝色MAGA，它叫‘别做MAGA’。”美国社会和政治作家帕夫洛维茨（John Pavlovitz）在推特上泼冷水说。

这家公司推特账号名叫“拜登-哈里斯帽子”，虽然与拜登总统竞选没有正式关系，但他们高调庆祝了民主党获胜，并试图尽可能地与拜登联系在一起。
它的推特主页还写着，这些蓝色MAGA帽子将帮助“盖过仇恨的红海”。

在舆论发酵的同时，一家报道企业、商业新闻的网站采访这家公司老板得知，帽子订单暴增。
报道还称，这位老板今年47岁，实际就职于联邦应急管理局，是拜登的狂热支持者。他总结说：“发表评论的人都是讨厌帽子的人。喜欢它的人都直接去网站下单了。”
